rule out

phraseB2Not compared — the two pools are counted one word at a time, so a phrase has no score

To rule out something is to decide it is not possible and drop it. Rule out foul play, rule out a deal, cannot rule out anything.

It is the standard word in police statements and medical notes, where ruling things out is half the work. The negative form is commoner still, since not ruling something out keeps it open.
