saltiness

nounB2Very rare — outside the 30,000 commonest English words, so you will meet it in writing rather than in speech — salt sits at #1,562neutral

Saltiness is the quality that comes from the seasoning mineral. Judge the saltiness.

It is one of the five basic tastes and the only one from a simple mineral. Saltiness also makes other flavours louder, which is why a bland dish is often just under-salted.
