Other forms: sandpipers

A sandpiper is a small wading bird that probes the mud with a fine bill. A common sandpiper, sandpipers on the shore, the sandpiper bobbed.

The bill tip is packed with sensors, so the bird finds worms by touch rather than by sight and can feed in the dark. The constant bobbing of the tail is how several species are told apart at a distance.
