seagull

nounA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #7,644 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: seagulls

A seagull is a noisy white coastal bird that will steal your chips. Feed the seagulls, a seagull took it, seagulls overhead.

Ornithologists point out that there is no such species — they are gulls, and several kinds live far inland on rubbish tips. They can drink seawater, using glands above the eyes to shed the salt. Feeding them is banned in several seaside towns.
