Other forms: seahorses
A seahorse is a small upright fish whose males carry the eggs. A tiny seahorse, seahorses in the weed, the seahorse's tail.
The male carries the eggs in a pouch and gives birth, which is genuinely unique among animals. It swims upright and badly, and it holds onto weed with its tail because it cannot fight a current.

sea horse comes from Middle English sehors. From Middle English sehors (“walrus”), equivalent to sea + horse. Probably a calque of obsolete French cheval de mer or directly of Late Latin caballus marinus. Named so after the shape of its head being similar to horse's head.
