sedation

nounC1Common in everyday speech and writing · #7,868 of 15,258neutral

Sedation is the calming of a patient with drugs. Under sedation, light sedation.

It is not the same as anaesthesia, since somebody sedated can usually still respond. Sedation for a procedure often leaves no memory of it, which is the point rather than a side effect.
