Shattered means broken into many pieces, or utterly exhausted. Shattered glass, shattered nerves, absolutely shattered.
The literal sense implies many pieces rather than a clean break, which is why it suits glass and ice. Figuratively it applies to confidence, illusions and lives — shattered hopes, a shattered family. In British informal use it means exhausted, and absolutely shattered is one of the commonest ways of saying so. Note shatterproof; and shatter as a verb, which is imitative in origin.
