shop assistant

UK/ˌʃɒp əˈsɪs.tənt/US/ˌʃɔp əˈsɪs.tənt/<a:non-cot-caught>
nounA2Not compared — the two pools are counted one word at a time, so a phrase has no score

A shop assistant is somebody who serves customers in a shop. Stocking shelves, working the till, and being asked where things are.

It is the standard British term, and American English says sales clerk or sales associate. The job is one of the most common forms of employment in the country and one of the least well paid. Retail work has changed enormously with self-service checkouts and online ordering, though somebody still has to put everything on the shelf in the first place.
