shoplifter

nounB2Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,681 of 15,258leans spoken

Other forms: shoplifters

A shoplifter is somebody who steals goods from a shop. Catch a shoplifter, a prolific shoplifter, stop the shoplifter.

Shops lose more to staff theft and to error than to shoplifters, though the shoplifter gets the attention. Security staff may only detain somebody on strict conditions, and getting it wrong exposes the shop to a claim for false imprisonment.
