shutter

UK/ˈʃʌtəː/
nounB1+2 meaningsCommon in everyday speech and writing · #7,056 of 15,258leans spoken

Other forms: shutters

A shutter is the hinged cover that closes over a window from outside. Close the shutters, wooden shutters, shutters open.

They keep out sun, storm and intruders, which is why they are standard in hot and in exposed places and rare in modern British building. Shutters are also the internal folding kind fitted inside a sash window. In photography, the shutter is what opens for a set time to expose the sensor, and shutter speed is one of the three controls that decide the picture. Note shuttered, meaning closed up.
