sideburns

UK/ˈsaɪd.bɜː(ɹ)nz/US/ˈsaɪd.bɚnz/
nounB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #7,870 of 15,258leans spoken

Sideburns are the strips of hair grown down in front of the ears. Long sideburns, trim the sideburns, grow sideburns.

The word is a reversal of a man's name: Ambrose Burnside wore enormous side whiskers, they were called burnsides, and the halves swapped over into sideburns. Few words in English were built that way. They are also called side whiskers.
