To sit down is to lower yourself onto a chair. The most ordinary movement there is.
It works alone and as an invitation, and do sit down is one of the standard courtesies of any British room. The adjective sit-down describes a meal eaten at a table rather than standing, and a sit-down protest is one where people refuse to move. There is a useful figurative sense, since sitting down with somebody means having a proper discussion rather than a passing word.
