skiing

UK/ˈski.ɪŋ/US/ˈski.ɪŋ/
nounA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,091 of 15,258leans written

Skiing is sliding down snowy slopes on two long boards fixed to your boots. Go skiing, learn to ski, a skiing holiday.

Downhill or alpine skiing is the resort kind; cross-country or nordic skiing is done on flatter ground and is closer to how skis were originally used, for travel. Ski lift, piste, off-piste and après-ski are the standard vocabulary. Note that ski is pronounced skee, that skiing keeps both i's, and that the verb is ski, skied, skiing — one of the odder spellings in English.
