skylight

UK/ˈskaɪˌlaɪt/US/ˈskaɪˌlaɪt/
nounB2Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #8,969 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: skylights

A skylight is a window set into a roof. Fit a skylight, light from the skylight, the skylight leaked.

It gives several times the light of a wall window of the same size, because it faces the whole sky rather than part of it. The trade-off is heat: the same opening loses warmth in winter and gains too much in summer. Flashing is where they leak.
