sled

UK/ˈslɛd/US/ˈslɛd/
nounA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,891 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: sleds

A sled is a small vehicle on runners for sliding over snow. Pull the sled, a dog sled, ride the sled down.

The runners work because pressure and friction melt a thin film of water under them, so a sled slides on water rather than on ice itself. British English prefers sledge for the same thing, and a sleigh is the horse-drawn kind.
