slipper

UK/ˈslɪpə(ɹ)/US/ˈslɪpəɹ/
nounA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #5,612 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: slippers

A slipper is the soft comfortable shoe you wear only at home. No support, no grip, and enormously comforting.

They are one of the more reliable markers of domestic life, and putting slippers on is a signal that the day's outside business is finished. Sheepskin, felt and tartan are the traditional materials, and novelty ones shaped like animals are given every Christmas. There is one famous glass example. The word comes from slipping the foot in, which is exactly how they work.
