slope

Other forms: slopes, sloping, sloped

A slope is the slanted side of a hill. Skiers love them and cyclists dread them.

The word covers any surface that is not level, from a gentle garden slope to a mountainside. Skiing gives us the piste, and hitting the slopes means going skiing. The verb means to lie at an angle, so a roof slopes. There is a British informal phrasal verb, since sloping off means leaving quietly to avoid work. In maths, the slope of a line is its steepness expressed as a number.
