social worker

nounB1Not compared — the two pools are counted one word at a time, so a phrase has no score

A social worker is the official who helps families and vulnerable people. A social worker visits, a social worker is assigned to a case, and a family is referred to a social worker.

The job sits between the family and the state: assessing what a household needs, arranging care or benefits, and deciding when a child is at risk. British English says the social worker for the person and social services for the department they work in, and a hospital or a school may have one of its own.
