soulmate

nounB2+Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #13,782 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: soulmates

A soulmate is the one person who fits your heart perfectly. Find your soulmate, we were soulmates, searching for a soulmate.

The idea is old and the word is not: Coleridge used it in a letter in 1822 and it stayed rare until the 1980s. Believing in one has been found to make relationships harder rather than easier, because it frames difficulty as evidence of a wrong match. Note that it need not be romantic.
