soundtrack

US/ˈsaʊndˌtɹæk/
nounB22 meaningsOccasional — familiar, but not everyday · #8,549 of 15,258mostly written

Other forms: soundtracks

A soundtrack is all the music written for and heard in a film. The film soundtrack, buy the soundtrack, a soundtrack album.

Strictly the score is the music composed for the film and the soundtrack is everything on the audio, but the words are used interchangeably. Soundtrack albums often outsell the film's takings. Figuratively, a soundtrack is the music associated with a period of your life: the soundtrack to my twenties. Note that the word comes from the physical strip of sound alongside the picture on a reel of film.
