The speed limit is the fastest you are legally allowed to drive on a road. A number in a red circle.
It changes with the road and sometimes with the vehicle, since lorries are often held to less. Britain posts them in miles per hour and most of the world in kilometres. A variable speed limit on a motorway changes with the traffic. The phrases are fixed: exceeding the speed limit, sticking to the speed limit, a thirty mile an hour speed limit. Enforcement is by camera almost everywhere now.
