spin-off

UK/ˈspɪn.ɒf/US/ˈspɪn.ɔf/
nounB2mostly written

Other forms: spin-offs

A spin-off is a new work built from a character in an older one. A spin-off series, spin-off from the original, a successful spin-off.

Most fail, since the character who was funny in small doses cannot always carry a show. In business a spin-off is a division separated into a company of its own, which is the older sense.
