standing ovation

nounB2Not compared — the two pools are counted one word at a time, so a phrase has no score

A standing ovation is applause given by an audience on its feet. Get a standing ovation, a long standing ovation, rose for a standing ovation.

It has inflated badly in some countries, where a standing ovation is now nearly automatic and therefore means little. The ovation in it was a lesser Roman triumph awarded for a victory not quite great enough.
