Stimulation is the rousing of something into activity or interest. Mental stimulation, sensory stimulation, lack of stimulation.

Mental stimulation is what keeps an ageing brain in better shape, and lack of it is a recognised problem in care settings. In animals it names the enrichment a zoo must provide, which is a welfare requirement rather than a kindness.
