stingy

UK/ˈstɪnd͡ʒi/US/ˈstɪnd͡ʒi/
adjectiveB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #7,652 of 15,258leans spoken

Stingy means hating to spend or give even the smallest amount. A stingy portion, stingy with praise, too stingy.

It is an insult, unlike thrifty or frugal, which praise the same behaviour: the difference is whether the saving hurts anybody else. It works for money and for anything given out — stingy with information, a stingy helping. Note the pronunciation, with a soft g, which separates it from stingy meaning covered in stings; and that the word's origin is genuinely uncertain.
