stockade

UK/ˌstɒˈkeɪd/US/ˌstɑˈkeɪd/
nounC1Common in everyday speech and writing · #7,062 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: stockades

A stockade is a fence of upright posts built for defence. Build a stockade, behind the stockade, a wooden stockade.

It is the simplest fortification there is and needs only trees and labour, which is why it appears wherever people arrive somewhere and expect trouble. In American usage a stockade is also a military prison. The word came through French from stock, a post.
