strawberry

UK/ˈstɹɔːb(ə)ɹi/US/ˈstɹɔˌbɛɹi/
nounB1Common in everyday speech and writing · #3,531 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: strawberries

A strawberry is a small red summer fruit with tiny seeds on its skin. Strawberries and cream, pick strawberries, a strawberry field.

It is not a berry: the red part is swollen stem tissue and the true fruits are the little pips on the outside, each one a separate fruit. The name is old and unexplained — the straw may be the runners, the scattered seeds, or the straw laid under the plants.
