sudan

nounB1+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,034 of 15,258leans written

Sudan is the African country on the Nile with more pyramids than Egypt. Travel to Sudan, northern Sudan, the Sudanese coast.

The pyramids of Meroë, built by the kingdom of Kush, number over two hundred — steeper and smaller than the Egyptian ones and far less visited. Sudan was the largest country in Africa until South Sudan separated in 2011. The two Niles meet at Khartoum. Note Sudanese as the adjective and demonym; and that the name comes from an Arabic phrase meaning the land of the Blacks.
