suede

UK/sweɪd/US/sweɪd/
nounB2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #6,274 of 15,258neutral

Suede is leather with a soft brushed surface. Suede shoes, a suede jacket, brush the suede.

It is made from the inner side of the hide, which is why it is soft and why it soaks up water and stains so readily. The name is French for Sweden — gants de Suede meant gloves from Sweden, and English took half the phrase.
