sunflower

UK/ˈsʌn.flaʊ.ə/US/ˈsʌn.flaʊ.əɹ/
nounA2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,712 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: sunflowers

A sunflower is a giant yellow flower that turns to face the light. A field of sunflowers, sunflower seeds, grow a sunflower.

Young ones really do track the sun across the sky and swing back overnight; a mature flower stops and faces east for good. What looks like one flower is hundreds of tiny ones packed into a spiral, which is why the seeds sit in that pattern.
