surprised

UK/səˈpɹaɪzd/US/sɚˈpɹaɪzd/
adjectiveA2Very common — you will meet it every day · #706 of 15,258leans spoken

Surprised means reacting to something you never expected. Look surprised, pleasantly surprised, I was surprised.

It is a brief emotion — surprise lasts a second or two and then turns into something else, which is why it is the shortest-lived of the recognised expressions. Pleasantly surprised is the fixed phrase for a low expectation exceeded. I would not be surprised is the standard formula for predicting something without committing to it. Note surprising; and surprise as noun and verb.
