sweatshirt

UK/ˈswɛtʃəːt/US/ˈswɛtʃəːt/
nounB1Common in everyday speech and writing · #5,483 of 15,258leans spoken

Other forms: sweatshirts

A sweatshirt is a thick cotton top with long sleeves and no collar. Pulled on over your head, and worn everywhere now.

It began as sportswear, made from a heavy looped-back cotton that soaks up sweat, which is exactly where the name comes from. A hooded one is a hoodie and a zipped one is a zip-up. It has travelled from the gym to the office over about fifty years. Sweatpants and a sweatshirt together make a tracksuit, which Britain has been calling a trackie for decades.
