A swimming pool is the big water-filled basin people swim lengths in. Tiled, chlorinated, and echoing.
English divides them by purpose, so a public pool has lanes and a paddling pool has none, and an outdoor one is a lido in older British usage. The vocabulary is fixed: the shallow end, the deep end, lengths and lanes. Throwing somebody in at the deep end is the standard metaphor for giving them a difficult task with no preparation, and it comes straight from here.
