swordfish

UK/ˈsɔː(ɹ)dfɪʃ/US/ˈsɔː(ɹ)dfɪʃ/
nounB1+Common in everyday speech and writing · #8,275 of 15,258neutral

A swordfish is a big sea fish with a long flat pointed bill. Grill swordfish, catch a swordfish, a swordfish steak.

The bill is flat rather than round, which is the difference from a marlin, and it is used to slash through shoals rather than to spear. It warms its eyes and brain above the surrounding water, which sharpens its vision in cold deep hunting.
