To take over is to take control of something from somebody else. They had it, and now you do.
It covers jobs, companies and countries, and in business a takeover is a formal event with its own rules, which can be friendly or hostile. It splits round an object. There is a lighter everyday sense of relieving somebody, so offering to take over the driving is a kindness. And things can take over without anybody deciding, since a hobby or a weed can take over entirely.
1phrasetake overTo assume control of something from someone else.
