taxation

UK/tækˈseɪ.ʃən/US/tækˈseɪ.ʃən/
nounB2+Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #12,066 of 15,258mostly written

Taxation is the raising of money by the state from its citizens. Fair taxation, the taxation system, subject to taxation.

No taxation without representation was the American colonists' slogan and it is still the argument for the whole arrangement. Taxes fall into direct, on income and wealth, and indirect, on spending — and who really bears the cost is often not who writes the cheque. Note that the Latin means an appraisal.
