technicality

UK/ˌtɛknɪˈkælɪti/US/ˌtɛknɪˈkælɪti/
nounC1Common in everyday speech and writing · #7,704 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: technicalities

A technicality is a small point of the rules that changes the outcome. Off on a technicality, a mere technicality, dismissed on a technicality.

The phrase is nearly always a complaint, since calling something a technicality says the rule mattered more than the truth. To lawyers the same point is simply the law, which is the whole disagreement.
