techno

US/ˈtɛknoʊ/
nounB1+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,378 of 15,258neutral

Techno is fast electronic dance music built from machines. Play techno, a techno club, Detroit techno.

It began in Detroit in the mid-1980s and is built on a steady four-to-the-floor kick, usually somewhere between 120 and 150 beats a minute, with the machines audible rather than hidden. Berlin became its second home after 1989, when empty buildings in the east made room for it. Note techno as a prefix in technophobe and technobabble, which is a different word doing different work.
