teddy

UK/ˈtɛdi/US/ˈtɛdi/
nounA2+Very common — you will meet it every day · #1,809 of 15,258leans spoken

A teddy is the soft toy bear a child sleeps with. A teddy bear, cuddle a teddy, an old teddy.

It is often the first object a child attaches to and losing one is a household emergency. The toy is named after Theodore Roosevelt, whose refusal to shoot a tethered bear on a hunt in 1902 became a newspaper cartoon and then a toy. Note that teddy also names a one-piece garment, which is unrelated.
