timing

UK/ˈtaɪmɪŋ/US/ˈtaɪmɪŋ/
nounB2Very common — you will meet it every day · #1,875 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: timings

Timing is the choosing of the right moment. The same action, done a second earlier or later, would fail.

Comedy is the standard example, since a joke lands or dies entirely on timing, and comedians talk about nothing else. Sport, politics and business all depend on it. The phrases are fixed: good timing, bad timing, perfect timing, and the sarcastic your timing is impeccable. Engineering has a precise sense too, since the timing of an engine is when the valves and spark are set to operate.
