toaster

UK/ˈtəʊ̯s.təː/US/ˈtoʊ̯s.tɚ/
nounA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,236 of 15,258leans spoken

Other forms: toasters

A toaster is a small machine that makes slices of bread brown and crispy. Pop-up toaster, put it in the toaster, a four-slice toaster.

The browning is the Maillard reaction and the sugars in the bread decide how fast it happens, which is why a sweet loaf burns before a plain one. The pop-up mechanism uses a bimetallic strip that bends as it heats. Note that the numbers on the dial are time and not temperature.
