toothpaste

Other forms: toothpastes

Toothpaste is the minty paste you brush your teeth with. A tube of toothpaste, squeeze the toothpaste, fluoride toothpaste.

The fluoride is the part that works, and the advice is to spit rather than rinse so it stays on the teeth. The mint is only there to tell you when you have finished. Note that you cannot get toothpaste back into the tube, which is a common metaphor.
