torn

UK/tɔːn/US/toɹn/
adjectiveB12 meaningsVery common — you will meet it every day · #2,340 of 15,258neutral

Torn means ripped, with an open split in the fabric. A torn page, torn jeans, torn in half.

It is the past participle of tear, which rhymes with air rather than with ear. Of a muscle or ligament, torn is the medical term: a torn hamstring. Figuratively, torn between means unable to choose: torn between two jobs, torn about whether to go — and that use is one of the commonest ways English describes indecision. Note torn apart, meaning both physically destroyed and deeply distressed.
