A train driver is the person who operates a train. Alone at the front, and responsible for a great many people.
The job requires learning the route by heart, since a driver must know every signal, gradient and speed limit on the line, and route knowledge takes months to acquire and lapses if unused. American English says engineer. It remains one of the most common childhood ambitions, and the pay is among the highest of any job not requiring a degree.
