trainers

UK/ˈtɹeɪnə(ɹ)z/
nounA2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,236 of 15,258neutral

Trainers are soft shoes made for running and worn everywhere else. A pair of trainers, white trainers, muddy trainers.

It is the British word; Americans say sneakers and Australians say runners. Almost nobody wearing them is running, which is the joke inside the word. The market is now driven by collectors rather than by athletes.
