trout

UK/tɹaʊt/US/tɹaʊt/
nounB1+Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,184 of 15,258leans written

A trout is a speckled river fish with pink flesh. Catch a trout, rainbow trout, trout fishing.

The flesh is pink because of what the fish eats rather than what it is — farmed trout are fed pigment to match. Brown trout are native to Europe and rainbow trout were introduced from North America. They need cold clean oxygenated water, which makes them an indicator of river health.

Where it comes from

Old English truht comes from Latin tructa, perhaps from a Greek word meaning a gnawer.

  2. Ancient Greek

    τρώκτης — nibbler

  3. Latin

    tructa

  4. Old French

    truite

  5. Old English

    truht — trout

Built from

  • τρώγω · Ancient Greek — to gnaw

From Middle English troute, troughte, trught, trouȝt, trouhte, partly from Old English truht (“trout”), and partly from Old French truite; both from Latin tructa, perhaps from Ancient Greek τρώκτης (“nibbler”), from τρώγω (“to gnaw”), from Proto-Indo-European terh₁- (“to rub, to turn”). The Internet verb sense originated on BBSes of the 1980s, probably from Monty Python's The Fish-Slapping Dance (1972), though that sketch involved a halibut.
