turnover

US/ˈtɝnoʊvɚ/
nounC13 meaningsOccasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,118 of 15,258leans written

Other forms: turnovers

Turnover is the total money a business takes in over a period. Annual turnover, a turnover of two million, turnover is not profit.

That last point is the important one: turnover is everything coming in before any costs, and profit is what is left after them. A company can have a large turnover and lose money. The second sense is about people: staff turnover means how quickly employees leave and are replaced, and high turnover is a warning sign. Note the food sense — an apple turnover is a folded pastry — and that in American sport a turnover is losing possession.
