turnstile

UK/ˈtəːnstaɪl/US/ˈtəɹnstaɪl/
nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #11,507 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: turnstiles

A turnstile is the barrier that lets one person through at a time. Through the turnstile, turnstile count, jump the turnstile.

Counting is half its purpose: turnstile figures were how attendance was measured before ticketing went electronic, and the phrase survives in football. It also enforces one ticket one person. Note that a full-height turnstile cannot be climbed, which is why they are used where fare evasion matters.
