turtleneck

nounB1+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,039 of 15,258leans spoken

Other forms: turtlenecks

A turtleneck is a jumper whose high collar folds over and hugs the neck. A black turtleneck, wear a turtleneck, a turtleneck jumper.

The British word is polo neck for the folded-over kind, with turtleneck used in Britain for the shorter unfolded collar — so the same garment has different names on each side of the Atlantic and a second meaning within Britain. The black turtleneck became a uniform of designers and film directors, which is a joke everybody now shares.
