Twenty-four is the number after twenty-three. The hours in a day, and a great many other useful things.
It divides by two, three, four, six, eight and twelve, which is why the day was cut into twenty-four in the first place and why so many measurements use it. A twenty-four-hour clock avoids the ambiguity of am and pm, which is why the armed forces and railways use it. Twenty-four seven means all day and all night, and it is now written 24/7 far more often than in words.
